Treffrey Deerfoot

Treffrey Deerfoot (Aissikotoyomaahkaa) is a well-known pow wow dancer, storyteller, and ceremonialist.  He is a member of the sacred Horn Society of the Blackfoot people and a partner to a sacred Beaver Bundle.  He is strongly committed to preserving and transferring traditional ways of life to the younger generations and has travelled internationally to Italy, China, London, Australia and Washington, D.C. to share traditional stories and dance.

Treffrey is an Elder for the National Indigenous Diabetes Association (NADA) and initiated the Traditional Healing Circle for Men for Siksika Health Services. Treffrey is a member of the Siksika Nation and a fluent speaker of the Blackfoot language.

In 2019, Treffrey, along with public health partners, began the Keep Tobacco Sacred Collaboration (KTSC) and for 5 years Treffrey guided this work with protocol, creating a strong foundation for the revitalization of Sacred Tobacco. It is with Treffrey’s vision that KTSC planted and harvested over 500 plants with the intention that all Indigenous People have access to Sacred Tobacco. KTSC is committed to continuing this mission.

Treffrey has been appointed by the Alberta Minister of Health to the Provincial Committee on Tobacco and Vaping and looks forward to continuing his journey of sharing the teachings and importance of tobacco as a sacred plant and its connection to wellness.
